Funeral Poems For Soldier – Goodnight

Funeral Poems For Soldier Goodnight

When I last heard from him, he’d been fit and well,
Looking forward to soon coming home.
But the knock at the door, with the uniform there,
And I suddenly felt all alone.

I’d felt it before, each time that the news,
Told of soldiers whose lives had been lost.
But it never sunk in, like that day at the door,
What a terrible … terrible cost.

It was what he lived for, the cause that he died,
The bonding of those Band of Brothers.
More important some days, than his real kith and kin,
And closer than wives or of mothers.

Yet it was to OUR love, that he always returned,
Between fighting for peace and for right.
So we’ll think of our soldier, who grew up so brave,
As we finally bid him, “Goodnight”.

Sleep well my brave friend, with the sleep of the just,
For whilst memories grow faint in the dew.
We remember your life as well as your death,
We shall never forget we loved you.
